Summary of the Position
This is a hands-on supervisory position located in Frederick Maryland responsible for leading a logistics team in overseeing all the work processes of shipment receiving, finished goods inventory maintenance, and distribution of USP products including Reference Standards and Publications. The individual must ensure that all shipments conform to the required rules governing the transportation of USP products to customers around the world including the DEA, International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT). This incumbent will represent USP in the International shipping environment, responsible for dealing with carriers, vendors, and customers.
Roles and Responsibilities
Has expert working knowledge of transportation logistics
Stays up-to-date on knowledge and understandings, including carrier restrictions by country, necessary for distribution of USP reference standards
Ensured all processes are followed that are necessary in adhering to regulatory requirements of IATA, DOT, and DEA
Understands and support requirements for both domestic and international shipping
Manages any required operational changes needed when situations beyond the normal arises
Ensures departments compliance with ISO9001 certification
Inclusive leader, provides great people management and talent development
Promotes an inclusive work environment and fosters a highly engaged team
Manages all staff associated with receiving, inventory maintenance, and distribution
Ensures all staff are properly trained and updated as needed on company policies and procedures necessary for the operation
Ensures/Conducts Mid-Year and Yearly evaluations on staff as required
Insist on neat and clean environment for staff and storage of USP reference standards
Manages all aspects of global distribution, including inventory management order fulfillment, and shipping support for other functions
Maintains emergency response guide for potential disaster recovery for the department
Examples:
Works with EH&S Manager/Lead to review working conditions and actions to ensure employee safety and proper working conditions
Participates as needed in other department meetings to lend support
Performance and Productivity
Ensure workflow plans for the department are followed and updated as needed
Establishes and institutes performance measures and goals
Identifies savings opportunities and executes productivity plans
Arranges reviews of performance and cost associated wit distributing USP products through all shipping partners
Explores alternative shipping methods and carriers necessary for distribution
Assist Purchasing Department in negotiating contracts, reviewing contract proposals, and changes from carriers and vendors required for distribution of USP reference standards and publications
Examples:
Coordinates quarterly reviews with shipping carriers to review performance
Meets with Purchasing Department management to review strategy for carrier contract renewals
Asset Management
Responsible for $60 million of inventory and $300 million of annual shipments
Co-leader of facility responsible for global production, customer service and distribution
Ensures finished goods inventory accuracy
Works with other USP functions to manage support needed for inventory maintenance and product distribution including technology needs
Approves purchases as required for departmental needs
Ensures the safe and proper storage of all USP reference standards and collaborates with colleagues to help resolve any discrepancies
Works with Lead Inventory Specialist to ensure required supplies are ordered and maintained that are necessary for reference standards packing and shipping
Example:
Reviews supply needs monthly with Lead Inventory Specialist
Supports and initiates technology changes/updates
Manages all technology implementation and testing required for changes affecting inventory, receiving, and distribution
Using Oracle ERP system ensures all fulfillment functions included inventory maintenance, receiving, and distribution are properly recorded and accurate
Acts as a trouble shooter with IT team to resolve issues effecting duties of the department
Trains and becomes subject matter expert for department on ERP requirements and uses
Customer Service
Supports Sales team in providing guidance and support logistics service and quality assurance for USP products
Supports all USP functions required to service USP customers and products releases
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to discuss, plan, and coordinate shipping department changes, objectives, and goals
Collaborates as needed with the Customer Service and Sales team
Communicates and shares updates as it relates to carriers and customers, relative to shipments, with Customer Service and SCD
Communicates with Customer Service on potential changes or process changes that support USP’s customer experience
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in logistics and eight (8) years of experience in transportation logistics. Equivalent experience considered in lieu of a degree
• Three (3) years of experience in employee management or supervision in a similar work environment
• Experience of working with transportation vendors such as FedEx, DHL, or UPS as well as a freight forwarder.
Skills Sought

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation and Logistics Management
• IATA and DOT shipping certified
• Prior experience in a scientific based industry.

• Results driven with demonstrated successful outcomes.
