Brief Job Overview

This is a hands-on non-supervisory position in the Technical Services (TS) Department within the Global Lab & Technical Operations (GLTO) division. The incumbent in this role will support the USP Continued Suitability for Use Program (CSU), which will include database management, preparing and reviewing CSU testing protocols, providing technical assistance to testing labs, reviewing analytical data and preparing summary reports. This position is a component of USP’s core business, and the incumbent is expected to support the Technical Services group with additional functions, including various product support programs.

The Scientist III/IV has the following responsibilities:

  • Supports day to day operations of the CSU program covering the USP RS catalog inventory.

  • Reviews testing history and drafts test protocols for lab submission based off designated testing requirements and schedules.

  • Assists laboratories to ensure testing is completed accurately and in timely manner.

  • Reviews laboratory reports, evaluates results and compares to previous data and RS attributes to assess and conclude on RS suitability for use.

  • Compiles current and historical data and summary assessment into CSU testing and trending reports.

  • Maintains and updates various databases documenting laboratory data and program determinations on suitability and CSU interval updates.

  • Works collaboratively with aforementioned USP departments as needed on test planning, data impact assessments and appropriate determination of next steps.

  • Supports the Technical Services group with other tasks, as needed.

Who is USP Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:

  • Experience in ISO or cGMP requirements for pharmaceutical testing

  • Hands-on experience and expertise in chromatography, spectroscopy, and/or other analytical testing methods

  • Skills to anticipate, troubleshoot, and solve technical problems

  • Ability to effectively multi-task/manage multiple parallel projects

Scientist III

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field with 6-7 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related scientific field with 1-3 years experience.

Scientist IV

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field with 8-10 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related scientific field with 4-7 years of relevant experience.

Additional Desired Preferences

  • Knowledge of USP products and services highly desirable.

  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and high regard for quality.

  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills required. Must be able to communicate effectively with diplomacy and enthusiasm across the organization.

  • Working knowledge of relevant computer applications and ability to quickly learn new applications as needed.

  • Knowledge of issues related to the evaluation of purity and content of reference standards.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • The ability to influence without direct authority.

  • Prior experience in a scientific based industry.

  • Ability and desire to work well with diverse employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner.
