The scientific affairs group plays an important role at USP in creating this strong foundation.

The (Sr.) Manager Scientific Affairs – LATAM, will share our vision of better-quality health for everyone and is driven by the opportunity to make an impact. The role will be responsible for working collaboratively across the USP LATAM Region, Global Science Division and the Strategic Marketing and Program Operations Division to build and execute a plan supporting USP’s scientific affairs function in the Latin America (LATAM) Region. This is the first position within the Region being hired for this new function and will be a part of a small global team of scientists responsible for scientific affairs. The incumbent will be responsible to grow USP’s scientific presence, building and fortifying key relationships with priority stakeholders, thought leaders and customers seeking to develop and execute science, and other collaborative initiatives influencing and supporting market growth and utilization of USP standards in region and globally. The incumbent will work closely with USP’s customer engagement, marketing, scientific, and external affairs staff regionally and at HQ (Rockville).

The role is that of an individual contributor, travel will be required up to 50% to 60%.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key scientific thought leaders in medicine research, education, manufacturing, regulatory communities.

  • Advocate to advance with quality of medicines through science based standards. In addition, she/he will provide the USP organization with insights into, and analysis of, scientific trends, developments and needs related to medicines and other applied programs, such as dietary supplements within the LATAM Region. Identify, monitor and communicate key scientific initiatives within the Region. Engage USP leadership and staff on those trends and work with them to analyze their impact on USP programs and strategies and craft and execute constructive responses.

  • Field science including explaining the science behind USP’s monographs, general chapters, and reference materials to both scientific and non-scientific USP stakeholders and customers including the pharmaceutical industry, regulators, academics, and USP staff

  • Acting as a resource to customer engagement colleagues to assist in achieving goals

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key scientific thought leaders in pharmaceutical quality standards in region

  • Providing scientific affairs support to other geographies

  • Conduct training programs and do presentations in science forums

  • Channeling USP’s technical thought leadership in pharmaceutical quality standards and growing USP’s influence in the LATAM science community including drafting technical white papers, presenting at technical conferences and formation of advisory boards

  • Developing contents for and delivering technical presentations, participate and conduct scientific workshops, and other educational courses on USP quality standards and reference material science for pharmaceuticals, stakeholders and regulators

  • Reviewing promotional materials and scientific publications developed by colleagues in other departments

  • Collecting and disseminating insights on scientific and technical trends in pharmaceutical quality standards in LATAM

Basic Qualifications

Senior Manager:

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or allied field with a minimum of 8 years, or M.S. and 10 years of relevant experience with tests and reference materials for pharmaceutical quality assurance

Minimum of 8 years of experience with techniques for quality assurance testing of chemical medicines including chromatography, mass spectrometry, wet chemistry, spectroscopy, titration, etc.

An equivalent combination of experience and education may be substituted

Manager:

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or allied field with a minimum of 5 years, or M.S. and 7 years or B.S. and 10 years of relevant experience with USP-NF tests and reference materials for chemical medicines

Minimum of 8 years of experience with techniques for quality assurance testing of chemical medicines including chromatography, mass spectrometry, wet chemistry, spectroscopy, titration, etc.

An equivalent combination of experience and education may be substituted

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with regulatory requirements and guidelines for pharmaceuticals for the US as well as at least one other country (e.g. FDA, ICH, etc.)

  • Experience with quality testing and standards for dietary supplements and herbal medicines

  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills (written and verbal) are required

  • Ability to develop and deliver compelling technical papers and presentations for scientific and regulatory audiences

  • Able to establish and nurture relationships with individuals of varying backgrounds and learning styles

  • Self-motivated with ability to collaborate with colleagues in science and marketing and across geographies

  • Ability to influence without direct authority

  • Knowledge and experience with the process and science used to develop new and revise existing USP-NF monographs, general chapters, and reference materials

  • Established scientific network in LATAM in the pharmaceutical quality community

  • Ability to travel across the Region

  • Spanish speaker and proficiency in English and Portuguese
