The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Community Engagement Manager in Rockville, Maryland


Summary of the Position

The Community Engagement Manager for Pharmaceutical Continuous Manufacturing (PCM) is a key non-supervisory technical position within USP’s Global Health and Manufacturing Services (GHMS) Division supporting USP’s PCM strategy. Through a variety of programs, USP convenes and engages with a broad range of scientists, experts, and regulators to build a community of practice in PCM focused on advancing access to knowledge, facilitate collaborations, and reducing barriers to adoption. The PCM Community Engagement Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of growing, managing, and maturing USP’s PCM Community of Practice. This will be accomplished through both online and in-person community building activities with a strong initial focus on growing collaboration on the USP Continuous Manufacturing Knowledge Center (CMKC). The CMKC is an online knowledge hub and engagement platform that organizes, contextualizes, and disseminates the most relevant scientific information on PCM and enables the community to discuss, collaborate, and engage in creating new content and solving collective problems facing the industry.

The PCM Community Engagement Manager administers, monitors, and manages the CMKC and other community development programs to build an engaged PCM Community of Practice where knowledge is conveyed, members actively contribute, problems are collectively solved, and new knowledge and insights are co-created. This will be accomplished through close collaboration with experts inside USP and a network of partner organizations.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day operation of the USP Continuous Manufacturing Knowledge Center, including oversight of community recruitment, registration, discussion board monitoring, and problem solving to ensure the community can easily collaborate.

• Develop awareness and recruitment initiatives across a variety of channels, including websites, social media, and special events.

• Work with stakeholders to define target groups for outreach, new knowledge domains for inclusion, and improve the community user experience.

• Develop and execute programs designed to advanced community engagement along the spectrum from consumption through contribution and collaboration into co-creating of knowledge benefiting the entire PCM Community of Practice.

• Conduct a tracking survey of the PCM Community of Practice to identify areas of improvement and monitor program effectiveness.

• Maintain relationships with vendors, partners, and key stakeholders, including the CMKC technology vendor, CMKC editorial board, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology & Education (NIPTE), and the US FDA.

• Liaises with key external collaborators to establish USP thought leadership in CM and ensure that USP’s thought leadership initiatives are embedded within the PCM Community of Practice programming.

• Collaborates with the USP Science team and external consultants to develop USP’s expertise in CM and supporting solutions to deliver to USP customers.

• Develops and executes additional programming tools for building and expending the PCM Community of Practice such as newsletters, journal articles, web posting, conference posters, and original co-authored content.

• Provides thought leadership internally and externally to support building professional credibility.

• Attends scientific seminars and conferences, publishes research, and makes presentations.

• Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• PhD in pharmaceutical science, chemistry, or chemical engineering or a related discipline; Master's degree with two (2) years’ experience; or Bachelor’s degree five (5) years’ experience is required. Alternative combinations of education and experience may substitute.

• Demonstrated thought leadership and technical expertise in advanced manufacturing technologies in the pharmaceutical industry.

• Excellent communications skills required, including technical writing, electronic media communications, public speaking, and professional presentations.

• Interpersonal skills such as professional effectiveness, cultural awareness, and emotional regulation that are key to effective and inclusive teamwork.

• Program management skills required for day-to-day administration of the community of practice including time management and program planning.

• Willingness to travel up to 15% of the time both domestically and internationally, adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with building or managing a scientific research community.

• Experience managing a research consortia team or subteam.

• Technical knowledge or experience in at least one of the following areas: flow chemistry, control strategy development for continuous manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, process analytical technology PAT), or application of continuous processes to pharmaceutical finished dosage forms.

• Understanding of current challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry.
