Summary of the Position
Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is a non-supervisory position that provides support to the Global Compliance and Ethics Department at USP. The incumbent will play a key role in the Global Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) footprint by providing support to the Rockville and Frederick facilities. The employee will work with the Global EHS staff to facilitate EHS programs, policies, and objectives and will report to the Global EHS Manager. The employee can be based at either the USP Rockville or Frederick location, but will be required to split their time between the locations. Assistance may be required at times to assist global USP sites
Roles and Responsibilities
Maintains and applies technical knowledge associated with USP Environmental Health and Safety Programs.
Identifies, analyzes and reports on risks and hazards associated with system designs, and assists staff and management in ensuring systems and designs are safe, operational and effective
Performs inspections of USP facilities and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards
Serves as the point-person for the Waste Officers and Safety Officers in their duties to include weekly monthly record keeping inspections ,manifest tracking and regulatory reporting; provides recommendation and remediation if gaps are identified.
Provides overarching support to various environmental programs, including air quality and chemical & waste management, tracking weekly waste inspections, proper waste and chemical segregation, and waste pick-ups to ensure USP is compliant.
Reviews quarterly laboratory safety inspections and provides EHS feedback to respective department management
Gathers information on incident investigations, compiles and reviews incident reports and evidence prior to submitting to Global EHS Manager to ensure complete and accurate information; makes recommendation for consideration
Works closely with Waste Management vendors to ensure compliance and waste reduction
Provides environmental health and safety training to staff along with compliance and ethics program training.
Reviews and updates environmental health and safety standard operation procedures.
Reviews employee safety programs such as Respirator, Bloodborne Pathogen, Chemical Management and Emergency Evacuations and recommends improvements
Completes and submit regulatory reporting (OSHA 300 log, Montgomery County Reports, EPA reports and Maryland Department of Environment).
Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a scientific discipline (environmental, chemical or life science preferred) and 5 years of Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry experience identifying and analyzing risks and hazards and supporting environmental programs.
- MS degree, preferably in a scientific discipline, and 3 years of experience identifying and analyzing risks and hazards and supporting environmental programs.
Ability to assist in applying chemical and environmental regulations and developing compliant workplace programs.
Experience working with databases such as Oracle, Metric Stream and Live-Link
Experience interpreting Federal, State and Local regulations regarding EHS programs
Team player with ability to build lasting productive business relationships with management and peers
Ability and desire to work well with diverse employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
Proficiency in MS office (Excel, Word, and Power Point)
