The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Manager, Central Laboratory Operations in Rockville, Maryland
Summary of the Position
This is a hands-on supervisory role in the Central Laboratory Operations (CLO) department within the Global Laboratory and Technical Operations (GLTO) division. The incumbent is responsible for managing laboratory operation support including compliance, safety, equipment and software operations, sample receiving and disposal, chemical waste management and other laboratory support. The incumbent works closely with the laboratory staff, quality assurance, IT, and other departments to ensure prompt and proper support to the laboratory operations including ISO compliance. The incumbent will utilize technical expertise, organizational and communication skills to ensure safe, high-quality, efficient and effective lab operations.
Roles and Responsibilities
Sets team priorities. Develops and mentors staff. Holds employees accountable for results.
Proactively involved in identifying solutions to technical problems.
Works collaboratively with other departments (laboratories, quality assurance, IT) to improve procedures with respect to quality, efficiency, and compliance both within the CLO department and the GLTO division.
Evaluates technical requirements and solicits bids from potential vendors for purchase of analytical equipment and software as needed. Assists in lab capacity and budget planning.
Ensures team is working efficiently and effectively to support laboratory operations including optimal use of equipment.
Ensures the laboratory maintains compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 17025.
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field and 10 years of relevant experience or Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field and 8 years of relevant experience or Ph.D. in science and 5 years of relevant experience.
Minimum of 3 years of direct supervisory experience.
Skills to increase the knowledge, abilities, and contributions of staff.
Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with diplomacy and enthusiasm both internally and externally.
Knowledge of issues related to the evaluation of purity and content of reference standards.
Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Working knowledge of common analytical methods and procedures, and expertise in calibrating and operating analytical instruments such as spectrophotometry and chromatography equipment.
Experience working in an ISO 9001, ISO 17025, or cGMP environment.
Experience working with laboratory software including Waters NuGenesis ELN and Empower.
