Principal Business Architect
The Principal Business architecture is an influential and prominent role that will examine the entire standards setting business lifecycle and map everything in a meaningful way, thus understanding impact, especially when considering changes to the standards setting business. Done properly, it links standards setting strategic outcomes to operations and includes scoping the role of people, processes and systems across the full value stream(s).
The Principal Business Architect is a visible and influential role, responsible for alignment of strategic goals and objectives and together with decisions regarding key business and IT initiatives supporting critical business outcomes. The incumbent will work closely with senior leaders and directly influence best practices for an integrated standards setting business view, especially during times of operational transition or critical change. The position will identify needed strategic capabilities and leverage business architecture artifacts to create corporate and business area implementation roadmaps, while partnering with IT leaders and architects to align technical solutions to business imperatives. In this role the incumbent will provide direct input into the planning, execution, and achievement of corporate and business unit goals and bottom line business value.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Principal Business Architect works to develop and document an integrated view of the business using a repeatable approach , cohesive framework, and available industry standard techniques and will minimally have the following responsibilities:
Developing a standard setting business architecture strategy based on a situational awareness of various business scenarios and motivations.
Applying a structured business architecture approach and methodology for capturing the key views of the standards setting enterprise.
Capturing the tactical and strategic standards setting enterprise goals that provide traceability through the organization and are mapped to metrics that provide ongoing governance.
Describing and documenting the primary standards setting business functions of the enterprise and distinguishing between customer-facing, supplier-related, business execution and business management functions.
Defining the set of strategic, core and support processes that transcend functional and organizational boundaries; identifying and describing external entities such as customers, suppliers, and external systems that interact with the standards setting business; and describing which people, resources and controls are involved in the processes.
Identifying the necessary data and information shared across the standards setting enterprise and the relationships of event driven data to the process. This will include mapping required data and information to the event driven process so that in partnership with IT, conceptual and logical data models can be designed to meet the needs of the standards setting enterprise.
Capturing the relationships among roles, capabilities and standards setting business units, the decomposition of those standards setting business units into subunits, and the internal or external management of those units.
Partnering with the IT architecture team in developing an IT framework that aligns with the business plan.
Translating standards setting enterprise and business strategy and capability roadmaps for the Enterprise and Domain Architects as well as other technology leaders, including recommendations to preserve integrity and ensure the delivery of a holistic, integrated solution.
Bachelor's degree in scientific, engineering, business or technical area is required. (Master’s or higher preferred)
10+ years of relevant experience and a minimum of 5 years successfully leading implementation and project management of large business architecture programs related to a variety of industry verticals.
Previous experience managing multiple projects simultaneously including 5+ years managing teams, working in a multi-sector and cross-cultural environment, and coordinating concurrent priority activities essential.
Proven ability to collaborate with operations, finance and administration as well as program management units to accomplish program objectives in a timely manner.
Demonstrated strong management experience and effective leadership in executing program objectives and accomplishing results.
The ability to act as liaison conveying information needs of the business to IT and data constraints to the business; applies equal conveyance regarding business strategy and IT strategy, business processes and work flow automation, business initiatives and IT initiatives, and benefit realization and service delivery
BPMN 2.0 and TOGAF 9.0, minimum
The ability to recognize structural issues within the organization, functional interdependencies and cross-silo redundancies
The ability to assimilate and correlate disconnected documentation and drawings, and articulate their collective relevance to the organization and to high-priority business issues
Experience using model-based representations that can be adjusted as required to collect, aggregate or disaggregate complex and conflicting information about the business
The ability to visualize and create high-level models that can be used in future analysis to extend and mature the business architecture
Extensive experience planning and deploying both business and IT initiatives
Experience modeling business processes using a variety of tools and techniques
Exceptional communication skills and the ability to communicate appropriately at all levels of the organization; this includes written and verbal communications as well as visualizations
Team player able to work effectively at all levels of an organization with the ability to influence others to move toward consensus
Strong situational analysis and decision-making abilities
