Summary of the Position

Publishing Specialist, Translations is a hands-on, individual contributor position responsible for the production and quality of USP’s multi-lingual publications. The incumbent in this role will use technology including XML authoring packages, graphics creation and editing software, content management systems, and internally developed applications to complete production of USP’s online publications in multiple languages. This position focuses on file version control, correct XML tagging, document format conversions, creation of graphics, and proofreading.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Creates versions and maintains strict document control in a component content management system (CCMS)

• Creates, reviews, validates, and corrects XML files based on standard proofreading mark-up

• Converts Word documents into XML in preparation for production

• Researches file history to ensure correct version of file is used in publications

• Creates and revises equations and graphics using MathML and Adobe Creative Suite as required for publication

• Assists scientists with technical issues as related to authoring

• Processes content for product releases by using documented procedures

• Reviews, proofreads, and makes corrections in XML files and other formats

• Analyzes, troubleshoots, and debugs files, referring only the most problematic to the next level of responsibility

Basic Qualifications

• Associates Degree or higher in Publishing, English, Translations, or other relevant field

• At least 2 years of experience proofreading and/or publishing production experience

• Fluent in Spanish (writing, reading, speaking) and English

Preferred Qualifications

• Must be proficient and independent in the use of Microsoft 365 components

• Must have basic knowledge of and experience using SGML, XML, HTML, DITA or other meta-language structures, including the ability to edit in plain text

• Experience using XML authoring software, such as Oxygen

• Ability to create and edit graphics in Adobe Creative Suite

• Basic knowledge of Computer Assisted Translations (CAT) tools

• Must work independently, be a team player, and work well in a tight, deadline-driven environment

• Must possess effective analytical and problem-solving skills

• Must possess an eye for detail, know how to mark up a document quickly and thoroughly for punctuation, grammar and style errors, and be proficient using standard proofreader's notation in multiple languages

• Must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and Spanish
