Brief Job Overview

This is a non-supervisory, technical position in USP's Analytical Development Laboratory (ADL). In this role, the Scientist I will be responsible for support of the laboratory and working on projects related to the research, evaluation, development, and validation of procedures that directly support creation/revisions of monographs, general chapters, or other standards in various USP publications

How will YOU build impact here at USP?

This position will provide support of laboratory operations as well as assist with development of procedures to evaluate the identity, strength, and purity of small molecule drug substances, drug products, dietary supplements, food ingredients and excipients. The Scientist I should have some experience in analytical techniques, can identify issues, implement planned experiments, and provide input/suggestions on routine projects. The Scientist I is a hands-on role which requires most of the work in the laboratory.

Laboratory work [80%]

· Assists with support of laboratory operations including instrument setup, maintenance, and performance evaluation

· Ordering, log-in and inventory of lab supplies (chemicals, reagents, etc.)

· Maintenance of chemical and instrument inventories and databases

· Assists with lab clean-up, inspection and waste disposal

· Working collaboratively and under supervision to evaluate, and validate HPLC procedures or other methodologies for the analysis of identification, assay and organic impurities for small molecule drug substances, drug products, dietary supplements, food ingredients and excipients

· Performs experiments according to a plan and may plan routine procedures, collaboratively provides input and communicates the results with the development team

· Routinely applies personal experience, academic training, and insights to identify and possibly solve technical problems

· Collaborates in a team setting to achieve goals

· Conveys technical information in both written and oral form clearly and effectively

· May participate and/or presents at internal and external scientific meetings

· May train staff in routine processes, techniques, and instrumentation

· May recommend and implement new approaches or processes to improve laboratory operations

Who USP is Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with team members, along with the following competencies and experience:

· Bachelor's degree in a scientific field with two years of proven experience.


· Master's degree in a scientific subject area.

· In limited circumstances, an equivalent combination of training or special scientific accomplishments is acceptable in lieu of the years of proven experience.

· Working knowledge, understanding, of chromatography analyses such as liquid (HPLC, UPLC) or gas chromatography (GC), as well as other general analytical chemistry principles and techniques

Additional Desired Preferences

· Hands-on experience of separation analyses such as liquid (HPLC) gas chromatography (GC), IR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, or KF is a plus

· Experience working in a fast-paced environment with dynamic priorities

· Flexible and concurrent management of multiple assigned tasks

· Experience working in the compendial, pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industry is a plus.

· Experience working in GLP or ISO-17025 regulated laboratories is a plus

· Experience working with Empower chromatography software and Electronic Laboratory Notebook Software is a plus.
