The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Scientist I in Rockville, Maryland
Summary of the Position
This is a hands-on, non-supervisory position in USP’s Analytical Development Laboratory (ADL). In this role, the individual is responsible for supporting a laboratory team which is working on technical problems in analytical chemistry related to the development and validation of specific methods that directly support standard creation/revisions to the various USP publications. The successful candidate supports laboratory staff by conducting experiments under defined conditions, overseeing controlled substance usage and waste disposal, maintaining logbooks/equipment, ordering and inventory of laboratory supplies, preparing samples and reagents, and assisting with special projects/assignments. This individual may execute 90%-100% of their work at the bench level.
Roles and Responsibilities
Energetically participates in activities with laboratory teams and internal customers to execute technical tasks and communicate results of work.
Executes all aspects of testing (including sample preparation, instrument setup, data collection) with excellence and essentially no errors.
Records experimental data, ensuring clear and accurate transcription of results and calculations.
Routinely applies personal experience, academic training, and technical insights to solve problems.
Performs laboratory support duties such as ordering, receiving, maintaining inventory, disposing, and tracking of controlled substances and monitoring, collecting, and arranging for chemical waste disposal.
Keeps laboratory supplies ready by maintaining inventory of stock, placing orders, verifying receipt, labeling them properly, and storing in proper storage locations.
Maintain equipment operation by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, calibrating simple laboratory equipment as necessary, maintaining instrument supplies.
Participates in chemical and column inventory activities by tracking, removing expired/retired chemicals and labeling materials appropriately.
Demonstrates a strong desire to continue learning and grow personal capability.
Participates in internal scientific meetings, especially group and project meetings; May pursue, recommend, and implement new approaches or processes to improve laboratory operations.
Be a point of contact for the laboratory with Facility and Metrology teams.
Bachelors Degree in a scientific discipline
Two years experience
An equivalent combination of associates degree with experience, training and/or special scientific accomplishments may be considered
Ability to pass a background check to work with controlled substances
Knowledge and hands-on experience working in a laboratory setting.
Working knowledge and hands-on experience with general analytical techniques
Excellent project organization skills and the capability to conduct work independently.
Highly motivated individual with excellent writing and oral communication skills.
Strong proficiency in computer software ( e.g . Microsoft Office).
Well-developed interpersonal, negotiation, and listening skills.
Possesses the ability to multi-task and to work effectively with a team.
