Strategic Business Development
Summary of the Position
The Sr. Data Scientist is a non-supervisory position within the Data Strategy and Analytics (DS&A) team within the Strategy and Business Development (SBD) division. The DS&A team performs a centralized business analytics function for USP – supporting all levels of the organization including the Executive Team. The Senior Data Scientist performs a highly visible, complex, and vital role in DS&A related to the modeling and evaluation of USP products, services, processes, and public health strategic opportunities, including support for business development activities such as strategy development, new product development, market development, sales analysis, etc. Using a broad range of analytical skills combined with public health, life sciences, or pharmacology domain expertise, the Senior Data Scientist performs and coordinates complex analyses surrounding business problems and make recommendations accordingly. They communicate analytical results to non-technical audiences – translating analyses into concise and clear business recommendations.
Roles and Responsibilities
Lead data analysis projects in support of strategic initiatives, global public health impact, medicine quality assurance operations, business development, and other needs of the organization
Identify business questions, understanding market landscape, planning and conducting insights and strategic research, forming hypotheses, creating recommendations
Advise internal partners on best practices in using data analysis to reveal actionable public health and medicine quality insights
Enhance predictive modeling and improve research processes
Identify opportunities to improve forecast development and validation processes, partnering with multiple teams
Develops and refine statistical/algorithmic models to support decision making at both the strategic and operational levels of the organization
Provides priorities, projections, and analyses to support USP monograph, general chapter, and reference material development
Support internal stakeholders through data queries, building and maintaining BI dashboards, computing analytics, and other data accessibility tasks
Develops ad hoc reports and analyses as needed
Acts as a thought partner with colleagues across USP on how to resolve unique business problems using data analysis. Partners include program unit heads, site heads, and strategy leaders
Set and manages internal partner expectations related to specific deliverables

Undergraduate degree required. Preferred majors in chemistry, biology, or other life science, or public health.
At least 4 or more years of experience in advanced data analysis, data science, or data strategy with bachelor’s degree
At least 2 or more year of experience in advanced data analysis, data science, or data strategy with master’s degree
MBA or other relevant master’s degree preferred such as, data science, analytics, statistics, computer science, quantitative public health or social science disciplines, or other related fields
Strong communication skills required: Verbal, written, and interpersonal
Advanced-level data analysis skills required, including demonstrated experience with procedures involving linear modeling, model development and validation, classification and/or machine learning
Highly proficient data manipulation skills including SQL and solid knowledge of relational databases
Demonstrated domain expertise in a life science (preferably chemistry, biology, or pharmacology) or global public health
Proficient in data visualization and modeling skills such as Tableau
Demonstrated experience with programming and/or data analysis coding languages such as R (preferred), Python, SQL, STATA, SAS
Experience with scientific projects involving hypothesis testing, research design
Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
Highly proficient in Excel skills and intermediate skills for other MS Office applications
Ability to explain highly technical or complex issues to a non-technical audience
Self-motivated and able to handle multiple concurrent projects and prioritize tasks independently
Demonstrates thought leadership and consulting ability
Excellent time and project management skills
