The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Senior Director, Biologics Industry Solutions in Rockville, Maryland

Description

This position is critical for the implementation of the USP biologics strategy, including the development and launch of a comprehensive pipeline of next generation of biological standards and solutions to cover the different therapeutic areas, enabling manufacturers to develop and release biological medicines.

The Senior Director Biologics Industry Solutions is a leadership position responsible for the strategic planning of product development (in collaboration with the science and technical leads, and business development team) leading a team in the management and analysis of customers’ needs and insights, demand generation for the program’s offerings based on segment level customers insights, and the launch and marketing of products leveraging advertising and social media presence.

The complexity and high profile of the projects associated with the execution of the biologics strategy will require collaboration across multiple internal and external stakeholders and partners. The incumbent is expected to initiate and build strategic collaborations, expand on our global stakeholders’ base, and enhance the USP connectivity in these areas.

The individual will be part of the global biologics leadership team and will lead a team of scientific and marketing staff that focuses on market analysis and offerings development, insight gathering, scientific and marketing materials development to support the launch of the USP biologics standards.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serves as the biologics senior leader for the industry solutions team, driving the program’s strategic marketing efforts, and supporting our scientific outreach and external collaborations

  • Develops and nurtures strategic collaborations to support execution of key growth objectives in alignment with an ambition to support the overall medicine value chain

  • Builds relationships with vendors and suppliers of materials of interest to the biologics program, and establish business models to execute on the biologics’ strategy

  • Collaborates with the science and standards lead and product development teams to grow USP’s biologics solutions offerings, supporting our customers in the life science and biopharma industries.

  • Drives growth of the biologics portfolio (using partner and suppliers) in collaboration with the overall global biologics team and the business development group

  • Prioritizes the development of scientific content (publications, educational offerings and trainings) and technical marketing materials, to support our customers’ outreach efforts and products’ marketing

  • Oversees development of product marketing materials, including product brochures, sales tools advertisements, digital and social media content, and any other promotional material required for creating demand around the USP products, leading to success of the biologics marketing plan

  • Leads the program efforts building a robust online presence and connectivity. Monitors customers satisfaction and identifies and recommends appropriate actions to improve customer and product profitability

  • Contributes to budget planning and revenue forecasting for the biologics program. Identifies opportunities to capture value from improved pricing or other initiatives

  • Leverage the stakeholder’s engagement outcomes to identify new business opportunities, new products, and services.

  • Aligns with cross-functional teams (e.g., marketing communications, market intelligence, regulatory affairs, and global teams) to execute on annual plans

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field and appropriate scientific area.

  • Minimum of 12 years of previous business management, sales, strategic marketing, team leadership, and/or market research experience.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience supervising, leading teams, training, or mentoring of other staff members.

Skills sought

  • Strong understanding of trends, processes, workflows, and market dynamics within the life sciences industry (e.g., biotechnology, pharmaceuticals)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred in either business or science. Education and training in pharmaceutical sciences and business highly desired.

  • Established knowledge of the biologics and biotechnology industry stakeholders, suppliers of reagents and materials used in manufacturing.

  • Technical understanding of the assigned product area and how customers use the products; ability to articulate customer needs

  • Track record of developing market offerings through supplier and partner relationships

  • Ability to gain customer confidence and build relationships

  • Familiarity with techniques of market research (i.e., focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, surveys, polls, Internet search) and good finance practices

  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial statements, survey results, and market insights

  • Effective at influencing peers and collaborating across the organization

  • Strong time management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills

  • Accountability and ownership of work

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and drive

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience managing diverse groups of directors and managers

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, relational databases, data structure, data query, analysis, and reporting.
