The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) (Senior) Director, Regions and Programs - North America in Rockville, Maryland
Summary of the Position
This is a supervisory leadership position which will lead the development and execution of strategies to advance public health through USP quality standards and allied products and services with the objective to enhance the supply of quality of medicines, dietary supplements, and foods. This role reports into Sr. VP., RPO and is directly responsible for leading externally facing functions for USP in North America region including customer engagement, customer service, and scientific affairs as well as overseeing education programs, verification programs, monograph donations etc. The (Senior) Director, Regions and Programs - North America is responsible for bring to bear ‘the best of USP’ using market research and data analytics, as well as close collaboration with regulatory external affairs, Science, and their global peer cohort of Regional General Managers. The role encompasses the US market, including US territories, as well as Canada.
The incumbent will establish strong and collaborative relationships with senior industry leaders and stakeholders in North America and represent the organization at key industry events. The incumbent will be responsible for regional market situation and analysis, new products / service introduction as well as launches in the North American region / to North American customers. They will identify new business development opportunities and will lead USP’s growth effort in the region by applying an in-depth understanding of the market, public health priorities, and strategic acumen.
Roles and Responsibilities
Lead and manage USP North America SCD team, Scientific Affairs and to align with USP corporate culture, mission, and public health programs in the region. Matrix Management: Ensure that department staff collaborates closely with counterparts from across the USP global organization. Talent and Leadership Development: Ensure talent recruitment, development, and retention as well the establishment of a leadership pipeline in the department.
Strategy and Marketing :
Lead the development and execution of North America regional strategy, plans and programs, both short- and long-range to support business goals and the objectives of the organization by working closely with the VP, Global Commercia Operations, Director of Customer Insights and Global Key Accounts Manager, PUTs and regions
Identify and execute growth plans, in partnership with Program Unit Teams, Science and GCO.
Customer Engagement (CE):
Develop strategic customer engagement plans, understanding of customer needs, identify opportunities for USP to address those needs and further the USP Mission. Work closely with the USP global organization to convert customer need and USP opportunities to programs where feasible
Drive visibility and engagement by representing USP in various industry forums and outreach, including CEO/CXO level executives in the industry and continue to strengthen USP’s brand awareness
Lead locally based Customer Engagement (CE) staff by supporting and reviewing implementation of regional CE goals. Develop capability among second level leadership. Oversee the channel partners/distributors strategy and their performance in the region for ensuring new business development and sustaining existing busines
Promote all USP products, services and programs at trade events, conference using the appropriate media, collateral, and promotional tools
Ensure that the customer Service Staff provides superior levels of support to all stakeholders.
USP Education & Capability building:
Lead the USP Education & capability building initiatives in North America including development of a long-term strategy and execution for scaling up capability building support to the manufacturers to enable them to achieve excellence in quality.
Lead the staff business development efforts for the success of education initiatives.
Develop self-sustaining business models for delivery of USP training programs to meet the capability needs of the industry. Seek and implement collaborations where suitable to deliver outcomes
Lead the team to coordinate monograph acquisition activities from North American customers, starting with identify potential sponsor organization, approach established contacts, obtaining a donation and maintaining communication and relationship on an ongoing basis with donor organizations.
Stakeholder Engagement (North America RA/SE):
Through the active collaboration with GEA and science, keep abreast with the changes that are occurring in Science and regulatory affairs and help engage the industry appropriately.
Develop and maintain strategic collaborative relationships with stakeholders and industry to advance public health objectives that align with USP’s capabilities and strategic plan in the region
Collaborate with RA/SE and science staff and be accountable to build, stakeholder relations and advocacy plan to advance USP's mission and strategic goals in North America.
Develop and implement a communications strategy for the region in close collaboration with the global organization to promote standards and growth programs
Oversee the Scientific Affairs activities responsible for protecting and growing USP’s scientific reputation, influencing to support market growth, and development and increased utilization of USP standards
Ensure that the staff are well trained to effectively explain the science behind USP’s monographs, general chapters, and reference materials to both scientific and non- scientific USP stakeholders and industry
Conduct training programs and represent USP in science forums
Work with Science and GEA to channel USP’s technical thought leadership in biopharmaceutical quality standards and growing USP’s influence in the North America region science community including drafting technical white papers, presenting at technical conferences
Education: MBA, master’s in sciences, pharmaceuticals preferred, excellent Communication skills.
Experience: 15 years to 20 years, working in a role with multi-functional responsibility.
Travel: The role involves 30% - 40 % travel
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must possess an understanding and knowledge of strategy, marketing, external relationship building and business development. Ability to represent the organization at the highest levels of stakeholder or industry, in the region.
Need to possess strong leadership, people management and interpersonal skills. Should be able to interact with government representatives, pharmaceutical industry representatives and channel partners.
Operates collaboratively at all levels of the organization in a highly technical environment.
Strong analytical skills and ability to work on basic processes as well as strategic initiatives required.
At least five (5) years of successful leadership-level experience in a multi-national pharmaceutical or standards organization,
Experience in external-facing roles preferred – customer engagement, regulatory & government affairs, communications, public affairs, corporate affairs
Strategic insight, intellectual capability, and collaborative mindset
Strong scientific literacy and Unwavering commitment to ethical business practices
Proven application of strategic thinking, project management, result oriented and change management skills.
