The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Senior Industry Programs Manager - Food Ingredients in Rockville, Maryland


This is a professional, non-supervisory position responsible for developing and executing on a comprehensive marketing plan that addresses all aspects of the marketing mix (price, product/service, promotion, and distribution/channel) which will drive maximum impact (both revenue and public health) for the Food Ingredients program. The incumbent in this role will create and deliver on marketing plans related to the Food Chemical Codex, high impact food standards, and materials. The individual will be required to develop an understanding of relevant customer requirements, priorities, and needs working collaboratively with sales team and additional internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the individual may be responsible for leading cross functional teams related to new product/service offerings.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Organizes, designs, and drives a comprehensive marketing plan for the Foods Program Unit.

  • Develops and drives the goals, objectives, strategies and tactics that meet established targets for profitable sales growth, market penetration and public health impact.

  • Understands and develops insights into customer segment needs and market information.

  • Develops and maintains comprehensive and accurate information on key competitors and utilizes the data to modify market development strategies and tactics.

  • Partners with External Affairs / Communications and Design staff to effectively allocate our media spending based on a clear understanding of the returns on investment from each of the different elements in the mix.

  • Partners with External Affairs / Communications and Design staff to create clear and compelling messages that resonate with the target customer segment in the industry.

  • Recommends new products, systems, and services to the Program Unit Team (PUT).

  • Leads designated project teams

  • Remains active in trade associations and professional groups influencing the target markets

  • Proactively identifies key trends and accurately translates them into tactics and strategies for market development.

  • Annually or as needed develops revenue forecast for USP products/services in the Food Ingredients Program based on the tactical marketing program.

  • Responsibly allocates and manages the spending in alignment with approved marketing plan.

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in a food related scientific field.

  • 5 years experience in commercial food development, food ingredient or food analysis role

  • Combination equivalent of degree / years experience accepted

Senior Manager:

  • Bachelors degree in a food related scientific field or marketing.

  • 8 years experience in tactical/strategic marketing of commercial food development, food ingredient or food analysis

  • Combination equivalent of degree / years experience accepted

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) in a Food related Scientific discipline

  • Prior experience in not-for-for profit environment

  • Working knowledge of USP Standards process.

  • The ability to influence without direct authority.

  • Results driven with demonstrated successful outcomes.

  • Ability and desire to work well with diverse employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent written, verbal communications and presentation skills.

  • Able to travel and participate in customer visits, stakeholder interactions and industry events as needed.
