Job Description

The Research and Innovation (R&I) department supports USP’s mission by conducting early research and incubation of projects and initiatives focused on exploring emerging technologies and trends that may impact USP or its industry stakeholders. R&I’s approach follows a typical product development funnel starting at ideation, proof of concept (PoC), and project incubation. R&I collaborates with both internal and external partners to ensure the successful build and graduation of new concepts. Our areas of interest range from advanced therapies, new analytical technologies, to informatics and digital innovation.

This hands-on position within R&I will focus on establishing a new Informatics-focused project-incubation function working on a diverse project portfolio. The position will serve as a key contributor to identify and investigate digital and informatics opportunities and support the development of informatics approaches at the enterprise level. This position is responsible for delivering products and/or technical prototypes aimed at exploring and recommending potential investment in the development and maintenance of a new Informatics product or service. This work will be conducted by working both within R&I and in close collaboration with stakeholders across the organization.

The position may oversee a wide-range of informatics projects aimed at furthering USP’s mission. These may include projects aiming to:

  • Leverage existing internal and / or external data

  • Develop new data sets and / or algorithmic approaches

  • Identify and establish partnerships

Roles and Responsibilities

Forward Looking

  • Acts as an Informatics Subject Matter Expert, providing expertise and thought partnership to initiatives across USP, where relevant

  • Scans, monitors, and synthesizes informatics trends that may impact USP or the industries for which it develops quality standards

  • Integrates trend scan activities, input from others (including relevant scientific and marketing staff), USP priorities, and understanding of emerging customer needs to recommend specific technologies/trends to be incubated for their potential implications on USP or the industries for which it develops quality standards.

  • Works with Research and Innovation department VP and other functions (e.g. Science Division, Corporate Strategy, Strategic Marketing, Information Services) to develop digital/informatics insights and support the shaping and execution of enterprise-wide informatics strategy

  • Engages with key external stakeholders and identifies areas of potential collaboration

Project Oversight

  • Oversees a set of incubated projects focused on informatics and ensures their successful and timely delivery:

  • Develops prototype products; identifies scalability, builds financial business cases, strategic rationale and operational implications of new informatics opportunities

  • Frames, structures and scopes projects to quantify and prioritize opportunities

  • Creates and presents recommendations that can be delivered at the Senior Leadership level

  • Establishes effective relationships with Science departments and functional teams in key areas that are critical to delivering successful project outputs

  • Establishes internal partners to gain cross-functional leadership perspectives and drive collaboration

  • Manages projects with responsibilities including strategy setting, work plan development, resource and budget forecasting, day-to-day management of the incubated-project leads, and coordination with relevant internal functions and external stakeholders

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelors degree in health sciences, data science, informatics, or other relevant field

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, excelling in fast-paced and dynamic environment requiring rapid skill / knowledge acquisition in diverse topics and fields

Senior Manager

  • Bachelors degree in health sciences, data science, informatics, or other relevant field

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, excelling in fast-paced and dynamic environment requiring rapid skill / knowledge acquisition in diverse topics and fields

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters’ degree or higher in health sciences, data science, informatics, or other relevant field

  • Top-tier management consulting experience in the application of informatics, analytics, or data-sciences to life-sciences or related sector

  • Diverse set of experience covering some aspects of big data analytics, artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning approaches, algorithmic design, mathematics, database design and use, bioinformatics/chemoinformatics (or similar disciplines), systems administration, server programming, application programming (including for mobile), and cloud computing preferred

  • Knowledge of healthcare industry, and associated data needs and usage

  • Demonstrates strong evidence of skill in literary research and market research analysis with exceptional ability to identify critical paths and synthesize highly technical information for executive decision making

  • Possesses strong problem solving skills and ability to work in a matrix organization

  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate outputs to both lay and technical audiences

  • Experience with planning, tracking and performance management of programs/ initiatives, including those requiring participation from multiple departments and stakeholders

  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills

  • Possesses curiosity and creative thinking to propose innovative strategies to enhance existing USP capabilities

  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities concurrently with strong results/goal orientation

  • Demonstrates sensitivity and diplomacy in working with SMEs and relevant stakeholders

  • Possesses high level of comfort with ambiguity and adaptable to fast paced environment

Supervisory Responsibilities

Will oversee 1-5 consultants or fixed-term employees focused on specific Informatics-related incubated projects.
