The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Senior Social Media Manager in Rockville, Maryland


Summary of the Position

This is a professional position responsible for leading, managing, advising, and continuously evolving the social media practice at USP. The Senior Social Media Manager is responsible for driving audience engagement around organizational priorities through social media using the flagship USP presence on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc. They take an active role in translating USP priority issues and initiatives in ways that build greater reach, stronger engagement, and a higher quality audience on social platforms.

In addition, the Senior Social Media Manager serves as a central figure developing and advocating for social media strategies and best practice adoption across the organization by leading the community of practice, influencing others, and activating USP employees. Working with organizational partners to expand social platforms, the Senior Social Medial Manager collaborates closely with internal teams and stakeholders to define and implement methods for applying social media strategies and tactics.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Brainstorm, create and publish compelling social media content to extend USP’s mission, communicate our impact on the world to drive priority outcomes and create engagement with our priority audiences

• Manage the monthly social media schedule, production and reporting

• Monitor priority topics/conversations/influencers on social, curate for engagement opportunities, engage directly and/or work with organizational partners to engage.

• Configure, launch, and optimize social media advertising campaigns

• Own the vision and implementation of a social media strategy for USP

• Review performance and provide feedback and analysis to leaders and business partners to inform improvement

• Provide strategic counsel and advice to non-flagship USP social media efforts to expand the USP social media presence (e.g. local accounts for global sites or divisions)

• Contribute best practices, case studies and other information to the Global Communications Community of Practice

• When needed, create content for and otherwise support select social media accounts, including, but not limited to, the CEO’s LinkedIn profile and Sr. VP Global External Affairs Twitter.

• Work with organizational partners to develop and apply social media strategies to accomplish intended outcomes

• Establish, document and share best practices, relevant social media news/changes and provide other relevant education to colleagues

• Manage templated social media visuals using Canva or partner with in-house Creative team for custom artwork

• Administer and manage the social media social media management tool

• When applicable, manage the relationship and guide the work effort with our social media consultants

• Consistently scan the horizon for new social media trends and opportunities that amplify the USP brand, mission, audiences and strategies.

• Report metrics, key performance indicators and tracking reports of performance of various social media initiatives, creating presentations to share findings with business partners

• Provide brand monitoring and analysis including, but not limited to, awareness, perception and preference

• Participate in strategic planning for USP’s digital engagement initiatives

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, PR or marketing; or equivalent education and experience

• Eight (8) or more years of social media experience, preferably in public health, non-profit organizations, or pharmaceuticals

Skills Sought

• Strong hands-on experience with social media applications (e.g. social media management technology) and platforms (e.g. Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube)

• Strong collaboration skills with deep social media knowledge, interpersonal savvy,

• Track record of innovation

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Agency experience is a plus

• Public health or Pharmaceutical industry knowledge

• Experience with Hootsuite, Canva

• Ability to work flexible hours when needed (e.g. provide live coverage during key global events)

• Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization and outside vendors

• Possess exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

• Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and results-oriented

• Excellent team skills
