Job Description

USP is seeking an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) to explore new ways of ensuring quality medicines thereby building a foundation for improved public health by leveraging vast amounts of USP physical, chemical, and other data. This is a Fixed-Term position for two years from the date of hire.

The position is a non-supervisory position that is responsible for developing pilot products/approaches aimed at improving and shaping USP’s understanding of the applicability of AI, its implications and opportunities to ensure quality of medicines for all patients. Potential pilot projects include deepening ongoing work on AI-based spectral analysis, and predictive modeling and optimization of analytical chemistry approaches.

The individual will contribute to USP’s informatics initiative, and will work cross-functionally with Global Laboratory Operation, Publications, Science, Strategic Marketing & Program Operations (SMPO), and IT.

The Research and Innovation (R&I) department supports USP’s mission by conducting early research and incubation of projects and initiatives focused on exploring emerging technologies and trends that may impact USP or its industry stakeholders. R&I’s approach follows a typical product development funnel starting at ideation, proof of concept (PoC), and project incubation. R&I collaborates with both internal and external partners to ensure the successful build and graduation of new concepts. Our areas of interest range from advanced therapies, new analytical technologies, to informatics and digital innovation.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design 1-3 pilot / prototype AI-based uses of USP data to help to ensure medicines quality, including identifying the public health need to be addressed, scientific rationale for exploration, research and development plan to pursue, key milestones and timing to achieve, and approach to progress tracking

  • Work with relevant USP experts to execute pilot plans

  • Verify qualitatively and quantitatively the validity of pilot outputs

  • Work with Strategy, IT, Science, and others to identify pilots to develop case for pilot scale-up, including workplan and key milestones

  • Coordinate, as needed with internal USP functions and governance

  • Attend or present at relevant conferences and meetings

Basic Qualifications

  • Senior Scientist III: BS/BEng + 8 years of experience, or MS/MEng with 6 years of experience with Artificial Intelligence, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and other relevant approaches to analyzing and deriving insights from structured and semi-structured data

  • Scientist IV: BS/BEng + 9 years of experience, or MS/MEng with 7 years of experience with Artificial Intelligence, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and other relevant approaches to analyzing and deriving insights from structured and semi-structured data

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the storage and retrieval of scientific data elements in the domains of chemistry, laboratory testing, pharmaceutical products, preferred

  • Experience in shaping and working with IT to establish a full AI technology stack

  • Demonstrated ability to work with experts in other subjects (e.g., analytical chemists) to capture their insights and feedback

  • Familiarity with chemoinformatics, bioinformatics and related data preferred

  • Knowledge of chemistry, biology, or other relevant science preferred

  • Experience in querying relational databases, web services, and other technology platforms to retrieve data

  • Possesses high degree of emotional intelligence, enthusiasm, and curiosity

  • Ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders at all levels

  • Results driven with demonstrated successful outcomes

  • Possesses attention to details in documentation

  • Demonstrates flexibility in approaches to developing and implementing solutions

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Possesses strong people skills and organizational skills

  • Excellent communications skills, including both verbal and written. Ability to present and impart knowledge to diverse audiences.
