Team Leader, Analytical Chemistry
The Team leader, Analytical Chemistry – General Chapters is a key people leadership and technical contributor role within the General Chapters Department of the Science Division. The incumbent leads a team of Scientific Liaisons, providing technical leadership as well as staff development and mentoring. The Team leader supervises the performance, training and development of the staff and ensures team work and collaboration within the team as well as with other key USP staff. The incumbent is responsible for leading technical staff in the development and revision of general chapters in the USP-NF , in the area of Chemical analysis and Physical analysis and supports the pertinent USP Expert Committees and associated Expert Panels.
Roles and Responsibilities
Provides scientific and professional leadership to SLs working in the area of Chemical analysis and Physical analysis, general chapters development and revision in accordance with established SOPs, business practices and procedures;
Provides support to the USP Expert Committees; monitors Work Plan activities and facilitates progress;
Manages staff workload, deliverables and output; provides updates to the department Director ;
Advises direct reports on general chapters development and revision strategies;
Prepares and conducts performance reviews for direct reports;
Develops goals and related performance plans for direct reports;
Participates in USP-based teams or committees to support business practices and initiatives;
Participates in the development of manuscripts for publication by USP (e.g., Stimuli articles) or in peer-reviewed journals;
Represents USP at scientific conferences/meetings, and other events sponsored by USP and/or pharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies;
Participates in the teaching and/or development of USP’s professional education course materials, as needed;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or allied field with a minimum of 10 years, or M.S. and 12 years of relevant experience with USP-NF tests and standards required. 10 years of experience with analytical techniques such as chromatography, wet chemistry, spectroscopy, titrations, etc. required. Minimum of 1 year of experience supervising, leading teams, training, or mentoring of other staff members. Exceptional knowledge of compendial standards related to pharmaceutical products/industry also required as is knowledge of regulatory requirements and guidelines for pharmaceuticals (e.g., FDA, ICH, etc). An equivalent combination of experience and education may be substituted.
Demonstrated technical leadership and people management skills is essential. Demonstrated stakeholder collaboration experience, with the ability to quickly develop and manage internal and external relationships and contacts. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to develop and deliver presentations to Senior Management and the entire organization. Demonstrated research, technical, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to take highly technical scientific information and make strategic recommendations quickly. Ability to develop and implement training plans. Demonstrated experience managing and participating in multiple projects. Able to drive the standards setting process with diplomacy and enthusiasm.
